The European Research Council (ERC) funding opportunities
The European Research Council (ERC) awards significant funds to both starting and established scientists all over Europe with excellence as the only evaluation criterion. The ERC, set up by the European Union in 2007, is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. It funds creative researchers of any nationality and age, to run projects based across Europe.
The ERC’s mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields, based on scientific excellence.
The ERC offers core grant schemes adapted to the career stage of the researcher: Starting Grants, Consolidator Grants, Advanced Grants. In addition, the Synergy Grant scheme allows 2-4 researchers working together to tackle ambitious research problems. Further, the Proof-of-Concept Grant scheme helps grantees to explore the innovation potential of their ideas or research results.
Since its inception, the ERC has funded more than 12 000 projects and over 10 000 researchers. The overall ERC budget from 2021 to 2027 is more than €16 billion, as part of the Horizon Europe programme (17% of the overall budget), under the responsibility of the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth.
